PUTRAJAYA, March 17 ― The National Velodrome in Nilai, scheduled for completion next month, will be the first venue to be ready for the 2017 SEA Games and Asean Para Games which Malaysia is hosting.
Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin said work on the velodrome was going smoothly and assured that it would be ready next month.
“Everything is on track. The venue which is almost ready is the velodrome in Nilai. The work progress of all venues for the SEA Games and the Asean Para Games is smooth, with no delay,” he added.
He told this to reporters after opening the KL2017@Schools programme at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Presint 8 (1) Putrajaya here today.
Construction of the RM80 million velodrome started in January 2015.
Meanwhile on today's event, Khairy said it was aimed at promoting the 2017 Kuala Lumpur SEA Games and ASEAN Para Games to be held on August 19 to 31 and September 17 to 23, respectively.
He hoped students, teachers and parents could together help ensure the success of both events.
“To those who are not eligible to apply as volunteers due to age factor, I hope they will still be at venues where the games will be held to give support to the country's contingent,” he added.
Khairy said he wanted Malaysia to be the first country in Southeast Asia to practice the Green Games concept during the SEA Games and the Asean Para Games.
“We not only want to be the best organiser of the SEA Games and to emerge as the overall winner, but also to protect the environment and make it the first SEA Games to practice Green Games.
“We want to produce a generation that not only excel in education and sports, but also committed to ensure sustainable development and protective of the environment,” he added. ― Bernama
