Co-written by Richard Wolffe, the book recounts the story of how the Michelin-starred chef swooped into Puerto Rico four days after Hurricane Maria and mobilised a brigade of chefs and volunteers to help cook 100,000 meals a day — 2 million in total — for the island's homeless and displaced.

Wolffe has worked with Andres' on cookbooks, his PBS series on Spanish gastronomy and is a columnist for The Guardian.

The book also explores what's described as a broken wasteful system that keeps some of the charities and NGOs on the island in business.

We fed an Island: The Story of True Story of Rebuilding Puerto Rico One Meal at a Time releases Sept 11 and is published by Ecco.

The chef's herculean efforts to feed the people of Puerto Rico also helped him win this year's Humanitarian of the Year award by the James Beard Foundation.

In 2012, the chef created World Central Kitchen, a non-profit that aims to come up with smart solutions to hunger and poverty.
