According to the Star Online news portal, Ahmad Zahid also said the PKR de facto leader will not likely play a role when the “big day” arrives, in apparent reference to the 14th general election.

“The government abides by the sentence set by the court. The length of a prison sentence has to be respected by all parties,” he reportedly said at the Antarctica Charity Run 2018 at Karangkraf this morning.

Convicts are barred from contesting to be lawmakers for five years after the completion of their prison sentences, disqualifying Anwar from taking part in the polls.

The former deputy prime minister is serving a five-year sentence from his second sodomy conviction that was delivered by the Court of Appeal in 2014.

His wife, PKR president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, revealed earlier this week that Anwar may be released on June 11.

The 14th general election must be called by June 24th.
