Perak police chief Datuk Hasnan Hassan announced that the police force would be augmented by an additional 500 personnel from the Police Volunteer Reserve (PVR).

Hasnan said the contingent was 95 per cent ready for the coming elections, and was in the final stages of a preparation exercise called Exercise Pilihan Raya Umum (PRU).

“We are doing this to determine whether our logistics and equipment are sufficient to deal with the issues that will crop up during the election,” he told a press conference today.

“There will be five phases to this exercise, which will include carrying out the 'real moves' during election. Once all five phases are completed, we will repeat them to ensure we are properly prepared”.

Hasnan said the contingent had also checked their election command centres, telecommunication systems, and computer servers.

So far, he said everything was going according to plan.

“This time, we have taken a new approach by preparing much earlier to identify and solve any issues that might crop up during the election.

“The exercises are based on information that we receive. We are 95 per cent prepared and the exercises will cover the remaining five per cent.

“Once that is done, I am confident that we will be completely ready.”

The coming election is expected to be held sometime next year. Several reports have quoted Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi as saying that it will be held within the next 180 days.
