KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 12 — Pakatan Harapan chairman Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad asked Pandan MP Rafizi Ramli not to lose hope today, following the latter’s 30-month prison sentence for breaching financial secrecy laws.
The conviction is also the second hanging over the PKR lawmaker, who is already facing another 18-month prison term for breaching the Official Secrets Act by divulging parts of a classified Auditor General report.
“Rafizi, keep your spirits up. Do not be disappointed,” the Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia chairman said in a brief video on Facebook.
“Our struggle may take time, and we may win or also lose. But we must fight on for the country and its people.”
The convictions have effectively ruled Rafizi out of contention for the 14th general election.
On February 7, Rafizi was sentenced to prison for leaking banking details relating to the the National Feedlot Corporation (NFC).
In August last year, the Court of Appeal upheld Rafizi's sentence for violating the OSA.
Both sentences were stayed pending Rafizi's appeals, but render him ineligible to defend his seat.
