PETALING JAYA, May 20 ― Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor's remarks about how women should dress shows a lack of understanding as to what gender equality means, Bersih 2.0 chairman Maria Chin Abdullah said today.
Tengku Adnan, known more popularly as Ku Nan, was recently reported telling women to “dress shabbily” to avoid harassment while speaking at a Transformasi Nasional 2050 (TN50) dialogue session.
“His remarks shows that there are still those who do not understand what is gender equality, those who do not respect women,” the electoral reform chair said while speaking as a guest during the PKR Wanita congress here today.
Maria said the remarks illustrated that the struggle for gender equality has some strong opponents.
“These opponents come use the guise of religion, race, gender and also patriarchy,” she said.
Maria was one of three recipients of PKR Wanita's “Bold for Change” award, an inaugural award by the party wing to acknowledge those who have fought for women’s rights and social justice.
