Toyota RAV4 Hybrid

The eighth Toyota-badged vehicle to be offered in the US with a hybrid powertrain, the RAV4 is about exclusivity as much as environmental awareness and will only be available in premium trim levels. It also gets intelligent four-wheel drive as standard along with a host of active safety systems including radar cruise control and lane departure alert.

The first car from the company to showcase its more aggressive approach to design, the new Outlander has a much more striking grille but still offers room for seven inside. But as well as a facelift, Mitsubishi promises the car has a quieter, more refined ride, and, like the Toyota, will come with active safety systems as options.

This is officially a crossover rather than a true off-roader but a very well packaged and proportioned one thanks to a high waistline but low roof and short overhangs. Hyundai has focused on fuel efficiency and on improving cabin materials and connectivity — it gets a five-inch touch screen with reversing camera as standard.

For 2016, Infiniti has made its luxury crossover even more spacious — a wheelbase extended by 80mm and eight cubic feet of extra interior space. It still comes with a 325hp V6 engine as standard but all wheel drive is an option.

This is Infiniti’s biggest direct competitor in the luxury crossover market, it’s also the most popular Lexus-badged vehicle in the company’s history. So as not to upset existing fans, the new RX is all about evolution — the biggest change is the adoption of the new spindle grill at the front. Inside, the quality of woods and leathers has also been turned up a notch, too.

Proving that crossovers can come in all shapes and sizes, the Alltrack blends everything that’s great about the VW Golf and imbibes it with extra rear storage space, higher ground clearance and all-wheel-drive. The result is something that’s great on the road but could carry a heavy load off it.

The car boasts 14 new or revised features and options for 2016 including a new front and rear fascia, a better dashboard and instrument panel. GMC claims that the Terrain is its most popular compact crossover with female drivers — 44 per cent of sales are to women and the number one reason for buying is its exterior styling.

A limited edition, the HST has an even sharper chassis and setup and a 380hp supercharged 3-litre V6 calling the shots. It has unique exterior and interior features to make it stand out from other Range Rover Sport models, such as tinted headlamp glass, a black roof, and seats trimmed in Oxford leather.

The replacement for the ML-Class, the GLE claims class leading fuel efficiency, a hybrid option and can be specified with a proper off-road setup for those that want something that really can perform no matter what the terrain. However it is also a technological master class packed with Mercedes’ industry-leading safety and driver aid systems.

This is the most expensive and most luxurious production Range Rover in the marque’s history and has been built to stave off the threat of Rolls-Royce and Bentley, who are both getting ready to enter the luxury SUV market. The SVAutobiography features reclining rear seats, cutting-edge connectivity and smartphone control and the most potent V8 engine ever fitted to a factory Range Rover. — AFP-Relaxnews
